The previous generation iPhone 6s and 6s Plus released back in 2015, were both among the most-shipped models in 2016. Meanwhile, Samsungs Galaxy S7 Edge was the Korean companys most popular flagship in 2016, and its ranked fifth followed by the Galaxy J3, Galaxy J5, and Galaxy S7 which was ranked ninth, outperforming S6 and S6 Edge in terms of sales. One has to wonder how well the Note 7 would have performed were it not for the disastrous recall.

With the recall of the Note 7, S7 and S7 Edge became the best flagships in the premium line-up of Samsung. Samsung has claimed five spots out of the top 10 most-shipped smartphones in 2016. Thanks to its mid-tier devices in the J series which are aimed at emerging markets.
Samsung is gearing up to release its next flagship the Galaxy S8 next week which it hopes will boost its smartphone business.
One of the models of Chinese manufacturer Oppo has also been listed among the top ten ranking.
The Oppo A53, however, managed to make its way to the No. 7 spot thanks to its popularity in China and India, two of the largest emerging smartphone markets. Indeed, a number of larger device makers are including the Asian countries in their broader business goals  Google, for example, is partnering with Indian cellphone service provider Jio to make an affordable 4G smartphone. Oppo registered a growth of 109% in smartphone shipments in 2016 to become the fourth largest smartphone maker in terms of unit shipment.

Notably, Huawei which has been growing rapidly and is now the third biggest smartphone player, had no phones in the top 10 most-shipped. Nor did Lenovo, HTC, or LG, companies that appear to be fading into the rearview compared to its larger competitors.

But for the time being, everyone is playing catch up to Apple.
