When it comes to changing consumer perception of its historically plastic phones, Samsung may figuratively be putting the pedal to the metal. After introducing new phones with an aluminum frame, like the Galaxy Note 4, the Galaxy Alpha, and the Galaxy Note Edge, Samsung is now said to be working on an all-metal phone in the form of the SM-A500.
The SM-A500, unfortunately, won't be a high-end flagship so you'll still have to stick with the Galaxy S5 or wait for the new Note series if you need the pure performance. Rather, the rumored metal-clad midranger is said to have an all-metal body without a removable back cover. Sadly, this means you won't be able to swap out the battery, but you'll get a solid phone similar to what rival HTC is offering on the One M8.
Rumored specs will include a 5-inch 720p HD Super AMOLED display, quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor, 8-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front cameras, and 16 GB of storage. Like the competing HTC One M8, Samsung is said to have a tray for insertion of the micro SD and nano SIM cards into the phone.
Unlike the S5 model, this mid-range offering will not have premium features like water sealing, fingerprint sensor, nor heart rate sensor, but will feature the new Ultra Power Saving Mode.
Is this the new era of Samsung's industry design? There's a popular saying of "fake it til you make it," and it looks like after years of toying with plastics and faux leather, Samsung may finally be making the move to premium metal.
