Panasonic did not fare well in the consumer smartphone segment with its Eluga line of devices, and now the Japanese manufacturer is trying something different with its latest offering, the Lumix CM1. Dubbed a "connected camera", the Lumix CM1 is an Android smartphone targeted at imaging enthusiasts and sports a protruding sensor similar to that of Samsung's camera-centric devices like the Galaxy K Zoom.
The device features a 1-inch sensor that can shoot 4K video and images with a resolution of 20 MP and an f/2.8 Leica DC Elmarit lens, along with a dedicated hardware shutter button and a slider that switches between camera and smartphone modes. There is also a manual lens ring that allows you to tweak the aperture, ISO and shutter speed.
The phone part of the Lumix CM1 features a 4.7-inch full-HD screen, 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 CPU, 2 GB RAM, 16 GB internal memory and a microSD slot that can accommodate SD cards up to 128 GB in size – a necessity if you're shooting 4K video. Other specs of the device include NFC connectivity and a 2,600 mAh battery. As far as software is concerned, the Lumix CM1 runs Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box.
Availability will be limited to France and Germany, with an official launch slated for the holiday season. What is is your view on Panasonic's Lumix CM1? Anyone interested in the camera/smartphone hybrid?
